Volcanicity breeds beauty in St. Lucia. The immensely picturesque island squeezes every ounce of spectacular from its Caribbean perch. Bubbling sulphur springs may be the last fading rumbles of the volcanic rage that molded the island, but its fiery legacy lives on in the dramatic peaks, black sand beaches, and lush blanket of rainforest enveloping it. St. Lucia can be your prototypical Caribbean beach getaway. But a surprisingly vast history, an underappreciated food scene, and staggering adventure opportunities make it a destination worthy of far more than a sunbed-bound beach break. Welcome to St. Lucia. P.S You can listen to us warble on about St. Lucia, or you can find out for yourself. We’re offering you the chance to win an all-inclusive four night stay for two people at Windjammer Landing Resort. There’s a few more goodies thrown in for good measure, like $300 in Luseta Beauty gift cards and $150 to spend on books at Shelf Savvy. What are you waiting for? Enter here.

| KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
All its beaches are public
You might stumble across a stunning stretch of shoreline that has the feel of a private beach. Brush those feelings aside, as every beach in St. Lucia is public. Sure, some of the hotels might put their own sun beds out, but everything else is fair game. Some of them might even be fine with you using their stuff if you buy a drink or two.
Of course, some are busier than others, so it pays to go further afield to find your slice of paradise. Renting a car gives you maximum freedom to get out there. The downside? For every person you avoid, there’s less bars and hotels to enjoy.
You can use US dollars
While St. Lucia does have its own currency, the Eastern Caribbean dollar, US currency is widely accepted on the island. It’s not necessary to exchange huge amount of currency before you leave, but if possible try and get some smaller bills. You’ll often receive change in the local currency, so splitting a $100 bill could be frustrating for both parties.
Thankfully, many places on the island do accept card, so don’t worry too much. You should have some extra cash for when you leave the hotel areas.

Temper your ideas of a perfect beach
St. Lucia’s beaches are amazing. The views, the water, the weather…everything. But, if you’re heading there for the idealized Caribbean beach, you might need to reel in the expectations a little.
St. Lucia is a volcanic island. This impacts every aspect of its environment, from the mountains to the fertile soil that allows its rainforests to blossom. But it also means its sands are varying colors of orange, brown, and black–maybe not what you had in mind.
If white sands are a must, head to Sugar Beach. The pristine white sand there is imported from Guyana, which is a pretty smart move from a tourism standpoint.
